Key features & specs

How it compares

When compared to traditional canister filters, the Seachem Tidal 55 Hang-On-Back Filter offers a much smaller footprint and significantly easier access for cleaning. While internal sponge filters are often cheaper, they lack the multi-stage versatility and surface skimming capabilities found in this Seachem unit. It occupies a mid-to-high price point but justifies the cost through durability and the inclusion of a specialized Matrix bio-media.

What to know before buying

1. Ensure you have at least 3 inches of clearance behind your tank for the unit to hang properly.
2. The blue maintenance indicator will rise when the filter media is clogged and needs rinsing.
3. Adjust the flow intake dial to balance between the surface skimmer and the submerged intake.
4. Regularly clean the impeller every three months to ensure the motor remains silent.
5. Always use the included leveling device to ensure the filter sits perfectly vertical against the glass.

"The self-priming feature is a lifesaver during power outages, as the Seachem unit restarts immediately without me having to manually pour water into the back." — Verified buyer

Sustainability & ethics

Seachem emphasizes long-term product durability to reduce electronic waste in the pet care industry. The packaging is made from FSC Certified cardboard, and the filter is designed to be fully repairable with readily available replacement parts, extending its lifecycle well beyond budget competitors.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Seachem Tidal 55 Hang-On-Back Filter worth it?

Yes, its combination of a self-priming pump and surface skimmer makes it one of the most reliable filters on the market. It saves time on maintenance and prevents pump burnout.

Does this filter work for saltwater tanks?

The Seachem Tidal 55 Hang-On-Back Filter is fully compatible with saltwater environments due to its corrosion-resistant components. It is frequently used for nano-reefs and quarantine tanks.

How does it compare to internal filters?
