What each material actually is, what certifications mean on the label, and the trade-offs greenwashing won't tell you about.

The three questions to ask a material

  1. Where does the raw input come from? Fossil, plant, animal or recycled — each has different upstream costs.
  2. How is it processed? Closed-loop solvents (lyocell) vs. open-loop chemistry (conventional viscose) is a bigger delta than the fiber itself.
  3. What happens at end of life? Biodegradable, mechanically recyclable, chemically recyclable — or landfill.

The best material in the abstract loses to the worst material processed well. Certifications and processor transparency are usually a better signal than the fiber name on the label.

Frequently asked about sustainable materials

Is recycled polyester actually sustainable?+

It uses ~59% less energy than virgin polyester and diverts plastic waste, but it still sheds microplastics in the wash. It's a meaningful improvement over virgin PET — not a silver bullet. Pair it with a microfiber-catching laundry bag.

Is bamboo always eco-friendly?+

Bamboo the plant is fast-growing and low-input. Bamboo viscose fabric is chemically intensive to produce, so the sustainability comes down to the mill. Look for closed-loop lyocell-style processing or FSC-certified bamboo.

How can I tell if 'organic cotton' is real?+

Real organic cotton is GOTS or OCS certified with a traceable transaction certificate. If the label just says 'organic' with no certifier, treat it as marketing until proven otherwise.

Which materials should I actively avoid?+

Conventional cotton (heavy pesticide use), virgin polyester and nylon (fossil-derived, microplastic-shedding), PVC (chlorine chemistry), and rayon from unspecified forests. Our per-material pages spell out the trade-offs.
