Key features & specs

How it compares

Compared to simple slow feeder bowls, the Buggin’ Out Puzzle offers a higher level of cognitive engagement through slider mechanics. It is more challenging than the Outward Hound Fun Feeder Slo Bowl but easier than the Nina Ottosson Lickin’ Layers. For cats that are new to puzzles, this product is a great stepping stone before moving to more complex treat mazes.

What to know before buying

1. Start by showing your cat how to slide the bugs open with a treat inside to build confidence.
2. Use small, dry treats like freeze-dried chicken or kibble to avoid jamming the sliding mechanisms.
3. Supervise your cat during the first few uses to ensure they don't chew or swallow any parts.
4. Clean the puzzle by hand with warm water and mild soap; do not put it in the dishwasher.
5. Rotate the puzzle with other toys to maintain novelty and prevent boredom.
6. For multi-cat homes, use the puzzle in a separate room to reduce competition.

"My cat went from scarfing down food in seconds to actually working for her treats. She loves sliding the bugs around and it keeps her busy for 15 minutes every day." — Verified buyer

Frequently asked questions

Is the Outward Hound Nina Ottosson Buggin’ Out Puzzle & Play Cat Toy Treat Puzzle worth it?

Yes, it is worth it for providing mental enrichment and slowing down fast eaters. Most reviewers report their cats use it daily for months without losing interest.

Does this puzzle work for kittens?

It works best for cats that are at least 6 months old because younger kittens may lack the coordination to slide the bugs easily.

How does it compare to the Nina Ottosson Lickin' Layers?

The Buggin’ Out is easier and uses sliding mechanisms, while Lickin' Layers involves rotating tiers and licking mats, making it more complex and better suited for dogs or very persistent cats.

Can I use wet food in this puzzle?

No, the puzzle is designed for dry treats only, as wet food can stick to the plastic and clog the sliders.

Is the product safe for aggressive chewers?

This puzzle is not chew-proof; if your cat is an aggressive chewer, supervise play and inspect the toy regularly for damage.
