In-Depth Review
The Outward Hound PoochPouch is a functional and accessible entry in the dog carriers for hiking sub-niche. This front-facing carrier is the best choice for pet owners who want to keep an eye on their dog while navigating easy to moderate trails.
Who it's for
The PoochPouch is ideal for those who prefer the security of seeing their pet's face at all times.
- Small dog owners (under 15 lbs) who enjoy casual nature walks.
- Owners of dogs with separation anxiety who need constant visual contact.
- Hikers on a budget who need a reliable, animal-free carry solution.
Key Features & Specs
| Capacity | Up to 15 lbs (approx. 7 kg) |
| Material | Lightweight water-resistant nylon |
| Design | Front-facing with mesh windows |
| Comfort | Padded shoulder straps and waist link |
| Safety | Internal safety harness attachment |
How it compares
Unlike the technical rear-carry backpacks from Kurgo or K9 Sport Sack, the Outward Hound PoochPouch is worn on the chest. This provides a different center of gravity which some hikers find more stable on flat ground. While it lacks an internal frame, its light weight makes it significantly more packable for travel.
How to use it
- Slide the straps over your shoulders and secure the waist buckle to prevent the pouch from swinging.
- Gently place your dog inside the pouch, ensuring their legs are naturally positioned.
- Connect the built-in safety lead to your dog's harness.
- Cinch the top drawstring to create a secure opening that allows your dog's head to pop out.
I use this for my 8lb Maltese on city trails; it's so much easier than a bulky backpack and she loves being able to see where we are going.
Sustainability & ethics
Outward Hound focuses on creating accessible pet gear using 100% synthetic, vegan-friendly materials. By using lightweight nylon, they reduce the material weight and transportation emissions. Their 2026 sustainability initiative focuses on transitioning to recycled polyester for all soft-sided carriers.
Pro tip
Distribute the weight by crossing the shoulder straps in an 'X' shape across your back for better long-term comfort.
