Key features & specs

How it compares

When compared to synthetic polypropylene rugs, the nuLOOM Maui Chunky Jute Area Rug offers superior breathability and a significantly lower carbon footprint. Unlike sisal rugs, which can be scratchy, this handwoven jute provides a slightly softer underfoot feel, though it remains more textured than cotton dhurries.

What to know before buying

1. Spills should be blotted immediately with a clean, dry cloth as jute is highly absorbent.
2. Initial shedding is normal for natural fibers and will decrease with regular, low-suction vacuuming.
3. A quality rug pad is recommended to prevent sliding and protect hardwood floors.
4. Natural variations in color are a hallmark of handwoven jute and verify the authenticity of the material.

"The texture is exactly what I wanted for my sunroom; it feels substantial and looks much more expensive than it is." — Verified buyer

Sustainability & ethics

nuLOOM sources natural jute, a rain-fed crop that requires little to no pesticides or fertilizers. The production process focuses on traditional weaving techniques in India, supporting local artisanal communities while ensuring the final product is completely biodegradable and free from animal-derived glues or wool.

Frequently asked questions

Is the nuLOOM Maui Chunky Jute Area Rug soft?

This rug has a chunky, straw-like texture that is comfortable for walking but may be too coarse for crawling infants. It is softer than sisal but firmer than wool.

Does this rug smell like dried grass?

A natural, hay-like scent is common upon unboxing but typically dissipates within 48 to 72 hours in a well-ventilated room. This is a sign of raw, untreated plant fibers.

Can I use this rug in a bathroom?

It is not recommended for high-moisture areas like bathrooms because jute fibers can swell and discolor when saturated. Stick to dry living spaces or bedrooms.

How does it compare to synthetic alternatives?

The nuLOOM Maui Chunky Jute Area Rug is 100% biodegradable, unlike synthetic rugs that sit in landfills for centuries. It offers a unique organic texture that machine-made rugs cannot replicate.
