Garmin Dash Cam Mini 3, Ultracompact 1080p HD Dash Cam

The Garmin Dash Cam Mini 3, Ultracompact 1080p HD Dash Cam is a remarkably small dash camera that fits behind the rearview mirror and records at 1080p with a wide 140-degree field of view. It is designed for drivers who prioritize unobtrusive design and ease of use over multi-channel complexity. Despite its tiny size, it includes voice control, incident detection, and Garmin's reliable parking guard feature.

Who it's for

This single-channel dashcam is perfect for minimalist drivers, rental car users, and those who want a simple, always-on recording solution.

• Daily commuters who want a no-fuss dashcam that doesn't clutter the windshield.

Key features & specs

How it compares

The Garmin Mini 3 is much smaller than VIOFO and Vantrue offerings, but sacrifices resolution (1080p vs. 4K) and channel count (single vs. dual/triple). It competes with the VIOFO A119 Mini 2, but the Garmin is more discreet and offers Garmin's superior parking guard and incident-detection algorithms. For drivers who don't need 4K or rear cameras, its size and simplicity are unmatched.

What to know before buying

1. Use a high-endurance microSD card (Garmin recommends their own or SanDisk high-endurance) to survive heat and continuous recording.
2. Install the dashcam in front of the rearview mirror for maximum discretion; the included adhesive mount is permanent—use the spare mount for repositioning.
3. Enable parking guard in the app to automatically start recording when the vehicle detects a bump while parked.
4. Voice commands like "Garmin, save video" work well but require a quiet cabin for best recognition.
5. The dashcam does not include a battery; it uses a supercapacitor, which is more heat-tolerant but requires constant power from the vehicle's 12V socket.
6. If you want Wi-Fi for easier file transfer, note the Mini 3 uses Bluetooth only—files are downloaded via the app over Bluetooth, which is slower than Wi-Fi.

“I chose the Garmin Mini 3 specifically because it’s so small you can’t see it behind the mirror. It records beautifully in daylight and night, and voice control makes it easy to save clips hands-free. Perfect for what I need.” — Verified buyer

Sustainability & ethics

Garmin has a strong environmental policy, including REACH and RoHS compliance, and uses recyclable packaging. The Mini 3's supercapacitor design (no lithium battery) extends the device lifespan and reduces fire risk in hot cars. Garmin also offers a trade-in program for old GPS devices, though nothing specific for dashcams. No animal testing or animal-derived materials are used in this product.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Garmin Dash Cam Mini 3 worth buying if I already have a phone mount?

Yes, the Mini 3 is still worth it because it records specifically to a microSD card and has incident detection. A phone mount doesn't provide continuous, loop-recorded evidence like a dedicated dashcam.

Does the Garmin Dash Cam Mini 3 work without a subscription?

Yes, it works completely offline without any subscription. The parking guard and voice control features require no monthly fees.

How does the Garmin Mini 3 compare to the VIOFO A119 Mini 2?

The Garmin Mini 3 is much smaller and offers voice control, but the VIOFO A119 Mini 2 records in 4K. Choose Garmin for discretion and ease; choose VIOFO for higher video quality.

Can the Garmin Mini 3 be used in rental cars?

Yes, its compact size and easy installation make it ideal for rental cars. The adhesive mount is removable with gentle prying, and the camera connects via a standard 12V adapter.

Does the Garmin Dash Cam Mini 3 have a parking mode?

Yes, it includes parking guard, which uses the built-in accelerometer to detect bumps and start recording even when the car is off. It requires constant power from the OBD-II port or a hardwire kit for full-time parking mode.
