Key features & specs

How it compares

Crayola Air Dry Clay offers a familiar, budget-friendly alternative to specialty brands such as MuseLuxe Air Dry Clay Kit (which includes multiple colors and tools) or earthen-based clays like EarthColor modeling clay. While specialty kits provide more variety, Crayola's 5 lb tub delivers better value per ounce for large projects.

What to know before buying

1. Keep unused clay tightly sealed in the resealable tub to prevent premature drying.
2. Work on a non-porous surface like a silicone mat or laminated table.
3. Use water-dampened fingers to smooth cracks during sculpting.
4. Allow finished projects to dry completely (up to 48 hours) before painting.
5. Can be painted with watercolors, acrylics, or markers after drying.
6. Store in a cool, dry place; avoid freezing.

"My 6-year-old used this for a school diorama—it was easy to shape and painted beautifully after drying. The 5 lb tub lasted for months." — Verified buyer

Sustainability & ethics

Crayola sources its natural clay domestically and uses minimal packaging (a recyclable plastic tub). The company has a long-standing commitment to non-toxic formulations, but is not FSC certified for paper packaging. Crayola products are not tested on animals and are manufactured in the USA, reducing transport emissions.

Frequently asked questions

Is Crayola Air Dry Clay safe for toddlers?

Yes, it is non-toxic and conforms to ASTM D-4236 safety standards, but always supervise children under 3 due to choking hazard from small pieces.

Can you bake this clay to speed drying?

No—this clay is designed for air drying only; baking may cause cracking or release fumes. Let it dry naturally at room temperature.

How does it compare to polymer clay?

Unlike polymer clay which requires baking, this air-dry clay is easier for kids to use independently and cleans up with soap and water.

Does it shrink or crack?

Minimal shrinkage (about 5%) may occur; cracking is rare if you keep the clay moist during sculpting and dry pieces slowly.

What can you make with 5 lbs of clay?

Plenty—small figurines, bowls, magnets, ornaments, or a set of 10-15 medium-sized handprints.
